The Advocate, a U.S. based national gay and lesbian news magazine, ranked Fort Lauderdale, Florida in the top five of their annual Gayest Cities in America list. Criteria used to rank cities include the number of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) elected officials, bookstores, softball teams and protection services.
- Salt Lake City, Utah
- Orlando, Florida
- Cambridge, Massachusetts
- Fort Lauderdale, Florida
- Seattle, Washington
“The area is teeming with gay bars and restaurants, and a ton of guesthouses and spas that run the gamut from mild to spicy,” declared The Advocate, who referred to Fort Lauderdale as a “rising homo mecca”.
Since the late 1980s, Fort Lauderdale has undertaken concerted efforts to clean up its image. After booting spring breakers from its shores and investing millions of dollars to update the seawall, sidewalks, streetlights and beaches, Fort Lauderdale has attracted multi-million dollar hotels like the W, Ritz-Carlton and Hilton.
In addition, the Greater Fort Lauderdale features many gay-friendly neighborhoods like Harbor Beach, Las Olas Isles, Oakland Park, Wilton Manors and Victoria Park. From waterfront estates to luxury beachfront condos to bungalow homes and everything in-between, Fort Lauderdale offers real estate to fit every lifestyle and budget. While criteria for the Gayest Cities in America didn’t include the number of great gay Realtors, there are a few we can recommend when you’re ready to buy, rent or sell a home in Fort Lauderdale!
